Grow a Personal Marijuana Garden

Many medical patients prefer to grow their own marijuana gardens rather than shelling out the dough at their local overpriced clinic. Growing Marijuana is as simple as growing any other plant, to an extent, but it does require extensive care during its growing phases.

Collect the proper Marijuana seeds and make them germinate by soaking the seeds in a wet cloth or paper for at least 24 hours. Maintain the moisture level properly and don’t over soak them. Sometimes over soaking may lead to decay of seeds, so maintain the moist level properly until the seeds germinate. You can even plant the seeds without germination process but to get healthy Marijuana it’s always advised by experts to germinate them first, and it usually raises the chance of success of growth.

Once the germination process is over, plant the seeds in sterilized soil to avoid parasite attack. The composition of soil is more important as it’s always advised to choose soil with more acidity content. (For some examples of growing supplies like soil and lighting, check out our Growing Supplies list.)

Once planted, concentrate more on the plant quality by maintaining proper UV lighting, fertilizing with more eco-friendly fertilizers, allowing proper ventilation, maintaining humidity & temperature, and watering properly to keep the plant alive and healthy. Nutrients are also very, very important to get a healthy and robust yield.

If you live in a humid place then you don’t need to water the plant as often, since the external humidity itself will give enough watering. Check the moisture levels in the soil before adding water every time so you don’t overdue it. Always make sure you don’t have much chlorine content in water, if you have use some extractors to separate chlorine from water.

Always make sure you are using proper pesticides to keep your Marijuana away from insects and pests attack. Don’t use high concentration pesticides which will damage the plant and, eventually, you (and the taste is kinda yucky, too). Always be careful while selecting a pesticide and use them with sprayers to properly spread along the plant completely. Check your plant often to make sure it grows properly.

To max out your plants potential, you must prune the top of the plant to give appropriate sunlight to other branches. Pruning will help your plant to grow faster in a natural way. Simply clip the top leaves every now and then so that the sunlight is able to trickle all over the plant—or you can line UV lights on the side of plants rather than the top, so that it spreads across the plant evenly.

After about two months of growth, you should be ready to harvest your plant! It varies depending on the marijuana strain, so make sure you research the strain of the seed.

In order to give proper taste to your home grown Marijuana, you need to follow the curing process. The curing process is as simple as that of growing process. Pull out the plant with roots and dry them completely by keeping the hanging in the sunlight. Make sure you are hanging them upside down so that the moisture won’t stay on the plant, and that other debris will fall out of the nugs.

After 24 hours, cut the Marijuana leaves gradually and keep them intact in a glass jar with some paper wrapped over the leaves to maintain dryness. Don’t use air-tight jars. Keep proper airflow to avoid them from decaying. Keep checking the jars daily until you get an acrid aroma from the jar. This process will take at least a week to give the acrid aroma.

Now your home grown Marijuana is all set to cure your aches and pains.

How To Grow Marijuana Outdoors

Before laws got in the way, growing marijuana in the fresh outdoors has been a favored method. Now there are so many laws prohibiting and restricting marijuana growth that you have to be careful, even if it is for medicinal purposes and you have the required licenses. So make sure you check your state laws before growing outdoors (usually it has to be hidden from public view and only for a certain amount of square feet per license).

Click for Germination Kit

Now that the legalities are out of the way, let’s get onto the basics. The entire life cycle of a marijuana plant depends on sunlight. So make sure you start your outdoor marijuana garden after the last frost, usually in late April or early May.

Your seeds should never just be planted into the ground willy-nilly. You never know if you’ll end up with a male plant, so always start off with a germination kit or with clones. Cloning machines are expensive (it takes the cut-lings from plants and roots them)  but they do allow for better plants (since you’ll never almost 100% that the result will be female).

Your soil should be a nice brown color, free of weeds and tilled. A lot of growers prefer to actually use a slotted pot or bucket with holes in which the plant is potted, and then to bury the bucket into the soil. This ensures that the immediate soil is rich in nutrients and healthy, and allows for easy re-planting if necessary. Make sure there is approximately three feet between each plant, so that there is enough room for roots and plant growth.

You can even just plant your marijuana plants in large buckets without messing with your actual ground. This allows for easy mobility and controlling of soil nutrients. Greenhouses, such as a small lean-to or portable tent, are great for outdoor growth, letting you control humidity and CO2.

Female plants usually last fifteen weeks and, if unchecked, can grow up to twenty feet tall with 8-inch diameters. You probably don’t want this, since it’s hard to keep from “public” eye. So trim your plants regularly and control the growth with a trellis.

How To Build a Marijuana Hydroponic System

Click for Single Bucket Hydroponics

Hydroponics is one of the most popular ways to grow marijuana. What is hydroponics, though? Basically it is the growth of a plant in a nutrient-enriched soluble, rather than in soil. This allows the grower control of the nutrients, minerals, and products going into the marijuana plant.

There are multiple ways to get a hydroponic set up. Kits are sold all over the place online. Besides that, there are three main ways that hydroponic systems are setup: in a hand-watered bucket, a water culture system, or an ebb and flow system. The first is the most well-known and easiest to build by yourself.

To assemble, you’ll need a bucket (or a water-tight plastic container) for each plant, plus another bucket or water-tight tray to act as a water reservoir, and some growing medium (like rockwool, coconut coir, coconut bricks, or hydroton).

Step 1: Drill about 6 to 10 holes in the plastic bucket, approximately 1.5 inches above the bottom. If holes are too small, they will plug up easily, but large holes will allow the growing medium to dry out quickly. You can use a screen or net to cover the inside of the bucket so that the growing medium does not float out.

Step 2: Add the growing medium to the bucket (after pre-soaking or washing the medium). Plant the seedling, rooted clone, or seed into the medium. (If using rockwool starter cubes, simply plant that in a larger rockwool cube and then into the bucket.)

Step 3: In the water reservoir, add the water and nutrient solution per the instructions (I recommend Fox Farm’s Trio). Make sure to check the pH of the water and adjust it as necessary.

Step 4: Insert the submersible pump into the reservoir with an attached drip-line. Drop the drip line into the top of the planted bucket. Plug the pump into a timer to keep your hydroponic setup regulated (for one plant, about a minute twice a day is good). An air pump outside the reservoir and going into the reservoir is a good idea to keep the water from getting stagnant.

The water culture system is good for multiple plants (although all systems can be rigged for multiple). You can use an aquarium or a large, long bucket as the base. You’ll also need Styrofoam that is 1.5 – 2 inches thick, plastic cups or slotted pots, growing medium, air pump and air stone, and nutrients.

Step 1: Cut the Styrofoam until it is smaller than the interior of the aquarium. It will be floating on the water and needs to be able to move when water level changes. Then cut holes the size of the bottom of the slotted pots (so that the bottom sits below the Styrofoam but it is balanced on top).

Step 2: Put growing medium into the pots, followed by the rooted plants.

Step 3: Fill the aquarium/water reservoir with water and nutrient solution. Connect the air pump to an airline, and the airline to the air stone; then the stone goes into the bottom of the water reservoir.

Step 4: Put the Styrofoam onto the top of the water. Put the slotted pots into place.

Step 5: When half of the nutrient solution is gone, only add water to bring the level back up (otherwise, you can have nutrient build up). The second time the water is half-way down, you need to drain the reservoir and mix a fresh batch.

How To Build Your Own Grow Room

Marijuana grow rooms are preferable to outdoor gardens for several reasons: you can control the humidity, temperature, and lighting; you control the growing medium, water, and insects. Plus, it’s more discrete.

But how do you build your own? Online, you can buy complete marijuana grow room kits (like the one on the left). Or you can pick and choose the materials best for your environment.

Click For Marijuana Grow Tent

First, you need an enclosed area. This can be a bedroom, closet, or tent (right), and it has to be tall enough to allow for adult marijuana plants. You’ll want the entire surface area of the walls to be covered in a reflective surface to allow the light to be reflected all over the marijuana plants, optimizing growth and harvest. It can either be simple white paint or Mylar, a reflective sheeting material that you can duct tape to the walls.

Now find out the temperature of the room. Marijuana grows best in temperature between 70 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Since lights and humidity will increase the temperature, consider whether you need an air conditioning unit, fan, or heater. After your grow room is set up, recheck your temperature to make sure it is optimal.

Next, consider humidity. Marijuana likes 40-60% humidity. Simply use a humidifier or a dehumidifier if necessary to keep the room the perfect shade of damp and dry. A circulation fan is important as well. If there are only a few plants, circulation can come by simply opening the door to check on your plants, but to maintain a good temperature and humidity, a fan is recommended.

Click Pic for Marijuana Grow Light Ballast

Light is one of the key-factors for optimal marijuana growth—obviously. A marijuana crop should be on a regulated cycle determined by the stage of growth. Make your grow space completely light free from external sources. Simply use something like caulk, tape, and cardboard to block the nooks and crannies of a grow room.

Now, invest in a good grow light system. It should hang above the plants and be adjustable in height. It is best to have a programmable timer on the lights, because you never know when you will be out of the house. Some growers prefer to use the LED light panels, which offer red and blue spectrum light sources and minimal heat.

This is optional, but it makes your marijuana crop flourish. A CO2 dispenser, like a bag or bottle, really amps up the growth process of your plants. They need it to do photosynthesis, a natural part of plant life. Being in an enclosed area really limits the amount of CO2 provided.

Congratulations, your grow room is built! Now it’s up to you to take care of your plants, either in a hydroponics or soil-based garden system.
