Mother Earth Medicine collective vacated

A political meeting hall for members of the Mother Earth Medicine collective is empty after collective owners vacated the building to prevent the landlord from being cited, they said.
The property owner of 780 Antelope Blvd. asked collective owner Jason Labonte to get his stuff out because the owner didn’t want to get cited, Labonte said.
The city has a temporary ban on medical marijuana collectives and votes tonight on making the ban permanent.
According to Labonte, Planning Director Scot Timboe told property owner Val Ross, if these guys have anything in the building I’m going to cite you $1,000 a day.
While Timboe did speak to Ross, he never told him that he was going to be cited, Timboe said.
In fact, it was Ross who contacted the city about the legality of the collective owners occupying the building.
Ross lives in Washington.
Attempts to contact him Monday were unsuccessful.
This shutdown is a violation of patients’ right to assemble and an attorney from Cal NORML, a promedical marijuana group, has been contacted, Kathy Prather said.
They’re taking away our right to assemble, she said. We’re going forth on this and we’re not backing down.
Whether the establishment is a collective or a political meeting hall, the fact is the collective owners have not completed all the necessary steps to properly occupy the space, Timboe said.
This is more than an issue of them saying we want this to be a political hall and we have a right to be here,’ he said.
The collective owners have been denied the an occupancy permit because they failed to produce the proper paperwork to show that they have complied with all the building and fire safety codes.
We’re not trying to be heavyhanded on the situation, Timboe said. We just want them to comply with building codes.
The Blue Toad Inc. collective owners voluntarily vacated its building at 206 Hickory St. last week because the landlord was being cited, owners said.
Despite the collective owners’ claims that the city has cited or has threatened to cite property owners, the city has not and probably will not cite property owners, Timboe said.
